Weekend Wrap: Round 1
Youngsters Lead AJAX to Opening Round Victory
If Saturday is anything to go by, the future of the AJAX Football Club is in strong hands, with the clubs youngest players guiding the Jackas to a 59 point roundone win over local rivals Old Haileybury.
20 year-old Jordan Cohen racked up 36 disposals and two goals, while Kane Nissenbaum managed 24 touches as well as two goals, highlighted by a beautiful running goal on his weaker left foot from a tight angle. Debutant Cameron Nankin also kicked his first goal for the club, slotting a set-shot late in the second quarter.
Speaking to AJAX Media, Nankin said “I was pretty nervous, first goal is always big but I managed to put it through, and everyone got around me which is good to see.” He added “I think I went alright, I eased into it in the second half and did a few things that I was happy with, hopefully I’m able to keep my spot and improve further.”
Coach Mark Choco Williams agreed, “I was delighted by what he did, he showed a lot of zip and took the game on and he took mark of the day for sure. His sister Lindy also played her first game and kicked two goals, so she’s got one up on him,” referencing Nankin’s older sister who claimed two goals in the Jackettes 26 point victory over Old Carey.
Earlier in the day, the new-look AJAX Reserves thumped Old Haileybury Reserves, kicking 16 goals and 21 behinds to cruise to a 78 point win. 17 year old Riley Michelson proved his young-gun credentials, bagging four goals and ranking amongst the best on ground.
Asked what would need to improve before Round Two, Choco said “I would think our general ball movement, and to be a bit cleaner. We turned the ball over too many times. I thought the coaches did a wonderful job, we had a few new coaches on board so it was great to see all three teams won.”
Round two will see AJAX take on Mazenod next Saturday at Central Reserve in Glen Waverley, beginning with the Reserves at 11.40am followed by the Firsts at 2pm, while the Jackettes take on the Hampton Rovers at Boss James Reserve, Hampton.
